San Ignacio Lagoon is home to one of the most extraordinary experiences on the planet, where migrating gray whales actively seek out interactions with people.

In this UNESCO listed national park and reserve, whale encounters are led by expert naturalists for safe, respectful, and amazing moments with these gentle giants.

At camp, warm, authentic Baja staff make sure every guest feels at home - with a relentless focus on safety and customer service excellence. Accommodation is in glamping and luxury tents, with private fly-in sightseeing transfers.

Signature experiences

In San Ignacio Lagoon, gray whales, guided by trust and curiosity, approach humans to seek out interactions. This remarkable behavior, unique to this lagoon, began in 1972 when a whale initiated contact with a fisherman, forging an extraordinary bond.

Since then, the whales have continued to voluntarily swim up to small boats, usually with their young, for close-up, personal encounters. Coming eyeball to eyeball with these giants is a unforgettable and mind-blowing experience!

What

Who

Mike Lever took over responsibility of Baja Expeditions after the passing of Founder Tim. Mike is a former water bomber pilot and founded Nautilus Diving Adventures over 30 years ago. He passionately strives to protect the legacy of Baja Expeditions and inject new energy into the business.

When

Baja Expeditions is Baja's oldest adventure DMC. Founded by conservationist and adventure travel pioneer Tim Means over 50 years ago, the company began by leading small groups of guests into the sierras of Baja to view forgotten aboriginal cave paintings. Tim sadly passed away in 1999, but his ethos remains rooted in all operations.

Positive impact statement

We work with local communities, who provide services such as the boats used for whale watching. We also create staff positions within the camp and purchase local products to support the local economy.

As a protected natural area, we work hand in hand with the government and conservation foundations to conserve the lagoon while ensuring minimal impact. At the end of each season, we take down the entire camp and leave nothing behind, restoring the site as if we were never there.
